Set entirely in type, this 1830 sheet takes its subject from its title: the slave trade of the United States in that year. Political printing of the early 1830s often carried antislavery argument or protest, and the domestic trade, which moved enslaved people from the Upper South to cotton and sugar regions farther south and west, was a growing target of such criticism. The print is catalogued among American political prints of the period, so it is best read as part of that public debate rather than as a neutral account of events.
