Few campaign prints from 1856 carry a candidate's name as plainly as this one, which presents John C. Frémont as the Republican nominee for president. The Republican Party was only a few years old, having formed in 1854 largely in opposition to the spread of slavery into the western territories. Frémont, a western explorer known as "The Pathfinder," was its first presidential candidate, and the party's campaign rallied around the slogan "Free soil, free speech, free men, Frémont." The woodcut and letterpress format suggests a broadside made for wide circulation, and the election ended with Democrat James Buchanan winning.
