Printed in New York by Nathaniel Currier, this hand-colored lithograph presents Franklin Pierce as the Democratic candidate for the nation's fourteenth presidency. Pierce, a former New Hampshire congressman and a brigadier general in the Mexican-American War, emerged as a dark horse nominee at the party's 1852 convention in Baltimore. The portrait was adapted from a daguerreotype by T. Dunlap, so it reworks a photographic likeness by hand for the printed market, a common practice before photographs could be reproduced directly in newspapers and books.
