Among the campaign images of 1856, this lithograph presents James Buchanan as the Democratic nominee for the presidency, a role he would win that November. The print was published in New York by N. Currier and based on a photograph by Mathew B. Brady, whose studio produced many of the era's best-known portraits. Buchanan went on to defeat John C. Frémont and Millard Fillmore, and his term, which ended just before the Civil War, is remembered mainly for the sectional crisis that followed.
