Among Nathaniel Currier's many portraits of public men, this one is notable for labeling its subject as the fifteenth president, a title James Buchanan did not hold until 1857. The print's date range ends in 1856, the year Buchanan won the Democratic nomination and ran for president, so it likely circulated during that campaign. It was issued under Currier's name alone, before his partnership with James Ives began, and because the color was added by hand, no two surviving copies look exactly alike. Buchanan, a Pennsylvania lawyer and former diplomat, was a familiar public figure by the mid-1850s.
