This hand-colored lithograph shows John C. Breckinridge with his title as Vice President of the United States, and it was published by Nathaniel Currier's New York firm. Breckinridge, a Kentuckian born in 1821, was elected vice president in 1856 and served under James Buchanan from 1857 to 1861. Currier's shop produced many portraits of public figures, often colored by hand and sold cheaply to ordinary households. The catalog gives only a broad date range for the sheet, but the image is a useful record of how a rising political figure was presented to the public before the Civil War. Breckinridge later served as a Confederate general and as Confederate secretary of war.
