Kentucky politician John C. Breckinridge appears here as Vice President of the United States, a post he took up in 1857 after winning election on the ticket headed by James Buchanan. The lithograph was published by Nathaniel Currier, whose firm sold inexpensive hand-colored portraits of public figures to a wide popular market. The record gives only a date range, so the exact occasion is unclear, but the sheet shows how national politicians were packaged for ordinary buyers before the Civil War. Breckinridge later served as Confederate secretary of war, which adds weight to this earlier portrait.
