This lithograph, titled for the Emancipation Proclamation and issued under the president's name, centers on a document rather than a battle or campaign, which sets it apart from many portrait prints of Lincoln from the same years. President Lincoln issued the proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free. It did not immediately reach slave states that remained loyal to the Union, and its effect depended on Union military advances. Printed around 1864, the sheet shows how quickly emancipation became a popular subject for wall prints, and its tinted stone lithograph reflects the techniques used to reproduce such images in quantity.
