Rather than a portrait, this lithograph reproduces the Emancipation Proclamation, the order Abraham Lincoln issued on January 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free. Printed in Chicago by Ed. Mendel around 1864, it carries the copyright of Thos. B. Bryan, president of the city's Soldiers' Home, and its subject headings tie it to fundraising for that institution. Facsimiles like this one were sold to support care for Union soldiers, turning the document's fame into money for veterans' welfare. It is a useful record of how the proclamation circulated in wartime America.
