Sandstone cliffs meeting the Pacific surf at Cape Kiwanda, a headland near Pacific City on the Oregon coast, are the subject here. Paul Caponigro made the photograph in 1959, and this print was made in 1961, during a period when American landscape photographers were often drawn to dramatic coastlines and the close study of natural forms. Caponigro's attention to texture lets the layered rock and moving water share the frame, so the viewer notices how the solid stone and restless sea seem to press against each other. The record files it under waterfronts, a fitting label for a place where land and ocean meet.
