This drawing shows Tarzan crossing an open plain toward the main gate of Bakhir, a scene rendered in India and red inks over pencil with opaque white highlights on ivory board. The original art was made for newspaper reproduction, and the printed overlay indicates the sheet was prepared for the printing process. Edgar Rice Burroughs created the jungle hero in pulp fiction in 1912, and by the 1940s his adventures had become a staple of Sunday newspaper comics. The sheet was later included in the Smithsonian Institution's 1971 exhibition "The Art of the Comic Strip," which helped establish comics as a subject for serious study.
