Here, Bertha Lum turns to a temple gateway, a subject that suits her interest in the architecture and daily life of China. Lum, an American artist, learned to cut and print color woodcuts in the Chinese manner after she moved to Peking (now Beijing) in the early 1910s, and she built each image from several carved blocks, one for each color. Her prints of temples, gardens, and street scenes were widely shown in the United States and helped introduce American audiences to East Asian woodblock methods. The record dates this print to about 1913, though that date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified.
