Here a winding road runs toward a stand of trees, the kind of rural path that the subject heading places in Japan. Bertha Lum, an American printmaker who spent much of her life in East Asia, produced color woodcuts in the Japanese tradition, using multiple carved blocks to build up layers of ink. Her 1916 print is signed and dated in pencil on the image itself, which was common for artists who wanted their hand on the finished impression. The work reflects the mid-1910s vogue among Western artists for the flat color, careful line, and quiet landscape of Japanese woodblock prints.
