A path lined with bamboo gives this color woodcut its subject, a scene of the kind Bertha Lum drew from the Chinese landscape she knew. The Library of Congress dates the print to about 1913, though that date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. Lum worked in color woodcut, a technique that required carving a separate block for each color, and she adapted methods she had learned from Asian printmaking traditions. The flat shapes and restrained palette in this print show the decorative qualities her work is known for.
