Bertha Lum's color woodcut "O-Yuki, the Frost Fairy" stands out for its Japanese-inspired subject, drawn from the folklore of Yuki-onna, the snow woman of Japanese tales. Lum (1869–1954) was an American printmaker who worked in the Japanese woodblock technique, carving and inking multiple blocks by hand to build up soft gradations of color. Around 1916 she produced many prints of this kind, and they reflected a wider American fascination with East Asian art that shaped popular taste in the early twentieth century. The record notes that its details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the date should be read as approximate.
