Bertha Lum's *Frost* turns to a winter scene of bare trees, a subject she usually set aside for the lively street and garden scenes that made her known. The print is a color woodcut, a medium Lum took up in the 1910s and 1920s after studying Chinese and Japanese printmaking methods, which used a separate block for each color. Her signature appears in pencil on the image itself, a sign that the impression was finished by hand. Lum's color woodcuts were widely shown in American print exhibitions of the period, and this example shows how she applied the same careful layering of color to quieter, more atmospheric subjects.
