The title, Aoyagi, which the record gives as "yellow willow," names the tree that anchors this composition, where a woman stands among its branches. Bertha Lum, an American printmaker, made color woodcuts of Asian women and scenes in the early twentieth century, using the Japanese method of carving a separate block for each color. Her work drew on the conventions of ukiyo-e while reflecting her own vision. This signed print, dated between 1900 and 1930, reflects the period's growing American interest in Japanese woodblock printing.
