*Aoyagi*, the Japanese name for the willow, is the subject that sets this color woodcut apart from the other Lum prints on the board, and the title's "yellow willow" gloss points to the tree's pale spring foliage. Bertha Lum (1869–1954) worked in the Japanese woodblock manner, building her color from several carved blocks, and she often collaborated with craftsmen in China. Willows carried associations with grace and the changing seasons across East Asian painting, so the subject connects this print to a long tradition. The pencil signature identifies Lum as its maker.
