Rain falls through the dusk in this color woodcut, and the soft, blurred edges of the strokes give the scene a damp stillness. Bertha Lum, an American printmaker, made it in 1907 using the Japanese woodblock method, which required carving a separate block for each color and printing them in sequence. Her work drew on Japanese and Chinese print traditions at a time when many Western artists were looking to Asian art for new ideas about composition and color. The pencil signature on this impression is worth noting, since it marks the print as one of the hand-finished examples she authorized.
