Rain falling at dusk in Japan gives this color woodcut its mood, with soft evening light and wet ground carrying most of the scene. Bertha Lum made it around 1907, when American printmakers were drawn to Japanese woodblock traditions and their flat fields of color and close attention to weather. Color woodcuts like this were built up from separate carved blocks, one for each hue, so the layered tones are part of the work's craft. The pencil signature adds a personal mark to this impression, and the rain itself is suggested by fine lines against the dimming sky.
