Taken before the bout at Boyle's Thirty Acres in Jersey City, New Jersey, this photograph shows Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier in the arena just ahead of their heavyweight fight. The contest on July 2, 1921, drew a crowd and receipts that made it one of the first sporting events to pass a million dollars at the gate, and Dempsey won by knockout in the fourth round. Photographs of the two men helped turn the match into a national event and showed how quickly boxing was becoming part of American popular culture.
