The caption, "Gateway to the City of Destiny," reflects the boosterish language Tacoma, Washington, used to promote itself around 1906. The city had grown as a rail and shipping center on Puget Sound after the Northern Pacific Railway chose it as its western terminus in 1873, and local promoters often cast it as a future metropolis. This card, copyrighted by J.A. Blosser and numbered 681 in his series, was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two side-by-side photographs into a single three-dimensional scene.
