Its title, "The New Woman," paired with a washday scene, sets this stereograph apart. The phrase described the independent, often college-educated woman who was debating marriage, work and the vote in the 1890s, so placing her at the laundry tub makes the card a pointed joke. Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm, issued cards like this around 1897 for parlor viewers, who held them to a stereoscope to see depth in the scene. Such cards often played on the popular debates of the day, so the image offers a glimpse of how the public argued about women's place at the turn of the century.
