A woman sits at her work mending a fishing net, a task that filled many hours in Baltic fishing communities, where nets were repaired by hand after each season or storm. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, which holds the travel photographs the American writer and lecturer Frank Carpenter gathered on his journeys abroad. It dates from roughly 1890 to 1923, a period when Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire and then, after 1918, an independent state. Its value lies in showing everyday labor that rarely appeared in the formal portraits of the time.
