A woman of the Makonki people, photographed at Mikindani on the southeastern coast of present-day Tanzania, is the subject here. The picture dates to 1902, when the region was part of German East Africa, and it was taken by C. Jincent, a photographer working in Dar es Salaam, the colonial capital. It comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, assembled by the American travel writer Frank G. Carpenter, who gathered images of people and places around the world for his lectures and articles. Pictures like this one show how outside observers of the period chose to frame African subjects, so they are worth reading alongside the caption.
