Titled simply *The fruit woman*, this English mezzotint dates to 1788, a period when London print shops produced large numbers of caricatures and social types for a buying public. Fruit sellers were a familiar sight on English streets, and printmakers often used such vendors as stock figures, sometimes for humor and sometimes for comment on class and manners. Mezzotint builds its images from tonal gradations rather than lines, which gave engravers a soft, rich surface well suited to figures like this. The record names no artist or publisher, so the print's precise intent remains uncertain.
