Taken at Belle Plain Landing on the Potomac River in Stafford County, Virginia, this May 1864 view captures the United States Sanitary Commission at work just as the Army of the Potomac was launching its spring campaign toward Richmond. Belle Plain served as a major supply base for the army, and the Sanitary Commission, a civilian relief organization founded in 1861, delivered food, clothing, and medical supplies to troops and hospitals. The print belongs to a larger Civil War photograph collection, and its subject shows how volunteer relief work followed the soldiers into the field.
