This view shows a garden pergola on the grounds at Belle Terre, an estate in Port Jefferson, a harbor village on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York. Pergolas, open structures of posts and crossbeams meant to carry climbing vines, were a common feature of the formal and Colonial Revival gardens that wealthy families built on Long Island around 1900 to 1910. The photographer, A.S. Greene, produced views like this for commercial sale, and the copyright notation on the print suggests it was registered for reproduction. Look closely at the shadows and the planting to see how the structure framed the path and the landscape beyond.
