Two Maryland country houses share this plate: Belle Air, near Collington, which the caption dates to 1757, and Tulip Hill on the West River, dated to 1759. Both stand in the Chesapeake tidewater, where prosperous planters built brick houses in the Georgian style during the mid-1700s, funded by tobacco and worked by enslaved laborers. The views were reproduced by the Heliotype Printing Company of Boston, a photomechanical firm, for a published survey of colonial domestic architecture, reflecting the late nineteenth-century revival of interest in early American building. The print itself has no recorded date, and the building dates come from an unverified caption card.
