Johna Jr. sits inside the open mouth of one of two large fish hung from ropes on Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast. The caption calls them "Jew fish," an older name for the giant sea bass that anglers caught in those waters, though the term has since been dropped. The island's resort town of Avalon drew sport fishermen hunting trophy catches in the early 1900s, which made such displays a popular subject. P.V. Reyes of Avalon copyrighted the photoprint, but the c1909 date comes from an unverified caption card.
