Few views of Lick Observatory show it under snow, which makes this winter scene on Mount Hamilton stand apart from the summer views that usually circulate. The observatory sits on a peak of roughly 4,200 feet in the Diablo Range east of San Jose. It was funded by the estate of land baron and piano maker James Lick, who died in 1876, and it opened in 1888 as the first permanent mountain observatory in the world. Its isolation, which made the winter road and buildings a serious undertaking, was part of why astronomers valued the site for clear, steady skies.
