Rather than a scene of a particular rink or pond, this wood engraving presents skating as a general emblem of the American winter, which is how its title, "Our National Winter Exercise," frames it. It ran in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on January 13, 1866, one of the weekly illustrated papers that turned wood engravings into the main way many readers saw current life. Skating was a popular pastime in the mid-nineteenth century, enjoyed on frozen ponds, canals and city rinks by people of many ages, and images like this one helped shape the sense of winter leisure as a shared national custom.
