Boxers, clowns and dogs share a single frame in this color lithograph advertising Chew Punch plug tobacco, which sets it apart from many plainer tobacco posters of its time. The National Tobacco Works of Louisville, Kentucky, commissioned the piece, and the Giles Lithograph Company printed it around 1886. Color lithography was then the most effective way to make eye-catching advertising, and manufacturers used bold, humorous scenes that could be understood at a glance. The copyright registration noted in the record suggests the company also wanted its design legally protected.
