Sir Eldon Gorst, Britain's agent and consul-general in Egypt, is the figure this color lithograph singles out, and its title, "The Cairo punch," suggests a blow aimed at the English councillors who advised the Egyptian government. The cartoonist, A.H. Zaki, shows these officials as puppets, a familiar satirical way of portraying foreign advisers as the hidden hands behind decisions made in Cairo. Gorst held his post from 1907 until his death in 1911, a time when nationalist critics of British influence in Egypt were especially outspoken, and the print's sharp humor reflects that tension.
