The subject is the tombs in the southern cemetery of Cairo, part of the vast necropolis that stretches from the medieval city toward the desert and is often called the City of the Dead. Francis Frith, the English photographer who traveled in Egypt, Sinai, and Palestine in the mid-1850s, made the view for a supplementary volume to his published series in 1857. Photographs like this one gave European readers a more direct look at Egyptian burial architecture than the engravings and sketches common in travel books of the time. The picture is worth studying for its careful attention to the domed tombs and walled enclosures, and as an early example of how photographers recorded Egypt's funerary landscape.
