Emigrant Gap, a mountain stop on the Southern Pacific line in Placer County, California, is the setting for this view of a timber snow shed carrying the tracks through heavy winter weather. The Sierra Nevada route was among the snowiest in the country, and railroads there built long covered galleries of heavy timber to keep drifts and slides off the rails. Southern Pacific maintained a large system of these sheds, and the print records one of the facilities that kept trains moving through the mountains between the wars.
