Donkeys, a South Carolina state flag, and a title that plays on "ass" set this lithograph apart, and the cartoon uses the animal to ridicule the Southern upper class. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union, in December 1860, and by early 1861 several other Southern states had followed, so the print captures the heated mood of that moment. Northern cartoonists often portrayed Southern planters as arrogant and foolish, and this image turns that stereotype against the secession movement. Its 1861 date places it among the many political prints that appeared as the national crisis deepened.
