The name painted on this storefront, William Daw & Co., is the detail that sets this print apart from other street views of the capital. The record does not say what the firm sold, so the sign itself is the main clue to its trade and its place on a Washington block. Between 1870 and 1910, Washington's commercial streets filled with shopfronts, hanging signs, and window displays as the city grew after the Civil War. The photograph comes from the James M. Goode Collection, assembled by a historian of the capital's buildings, and it preserves the look of one ordinary business during that expansion.
