Lord William Russell, the sitter in this engraving, was a Whig politician who was executed in 1683 for his alleged part in the Rye House Plot, a conspiracy against Charles II and his brother James. His death made him a lasting symbol of opposition to the Stuart court. The likeness is an engraving by H. Robinson after a painting by Sir Peter Lely, the Dutch-born portraitist who shaped English court portraiture after the Restoration. The caption card gives no print date, but Lely died in 1680, so the original portrait must predate the execution.
