The engraving shows the poet William Cowper, whose life spanned 1731 to 1800, in a portrait engraved by T. Gunbrede after a drawing by T. Laurence. Cowper spent much of his life in rural Buckinghamshire, where he wrote *The Task*, a long blank-verse poem, and the comic ballad *John Gilpin*. Years of depression shaped his reputation, and portraits like this one helped readers link his face to his gentle, melancholy verse. The card records no date, so the print's exact year remains unknown.
