This portrait shows William A. Sunday, the former professional baseball outfielder who left the diamond in the early 1890s to become one of the best-known revivalist preachers in the United States. Sunday played for several National League clubs, including the Chicago White Stockings, before a religious conversion in 1886 set him on his new path. By the time this photoprint was made around 1917, his large tent and city campaigns drew crowds across the country, and his fast-paced, theatrical sermons made him a national celebrity. Images like this one circulated widely among his admirers, so the print offers a window into how he presented himself to the public.
