William McKinley served as the 25th president of the United States from 1897 until his assassination in 1901, and this portrait dates to around 1896, the year he won the presidency in a contest against William Jennings Bryan. The record is a single photographic print, and its caption card carries only a few notations, so the sitting's exact occasion and photographer are not recorded here. Images of McKinley from this period were widely reproduced in newspapers, campaign material and souvenir books, which made his face familiar to voters across the country. Viewed today, the portrait shows the formal dress and studio conventions of late nineteenth-century political photography.
