William Howard Taft, born in 1857 and later the 27th president of the United States, appears here in a portrait made around 1908, the year he won the Republican nomination and the election that followed. The record's caption card supplies the name and dates, though its details have not been independently verified, so the print is best read as a documentary likeness of a man at the height of his public career. Taft had already served as Civil Governor of the Philippines and as Secretary of War before stepping into the presidency in 1909. Portraits from this period were widely reproduced in newspapers and campaign material, which helped shape how voters came to know a candidate.
