Taken around mid-April 1913, this portrait shows Woodrow Wilson only a few weeks into his first term as the 28th president of the United States. Wilson had been sworn in on March 4, 1913, after a three-way election in which the Republican vote split between William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, and he arrived in Washington with a background as president of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey. The date comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact sitting is best read as approximate.
