This print is a portrait of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, who served from 1913 to 1921 and is identified here by his dates of birth and death. It came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials and public life in the 1910s and 1920s, and the album record credits Herbert E. French with the work. Wilson led the country through World War I and pressed for the League of Nations, a campaign that defined his presidency and divided Congress. Because the record gives only a date range, the exact year of the sitting is uncertain, but the portrait belongs to the period when Wilson was at the center of national and international politics.
