This portrait shows Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), the Scottish-born poet and weaver who became the founder of American ornithology after emigrating to Philadelphia in 1794. Wilson spent years traveling the eastern United States to document its birds, and his nine-volume *American Ornithology* (1808-1814), with illustrations he drew himself, was the first comprehensive survey of the nation's birds. The record describes this as a halftone reproduction of a drawing, a photomechanical process that came into wide use in the late nineteenth century, so the image is a later copy of an earlier portrait. The caption card does not record a date, so the original drawing's date and artist remain unconfirmed.
