This portrait shows Alexander Graham Bell, the Scottish-born inventor who patented the telephone in 1876. It belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., photographer known for portraits of prominent figures and scenes of American life. The Library of Congress dates the picture to around 1900, an estimate made by its staff. Around that time Bell was turning much of his energy from telephone work to aviation research, including the tetrahedral kites he built at his estate in Nova Scotia, so the portrait catches him as his interests were shifting.
