This portrait shows James Rudolph Garfield, the son of President James A. Garfield, whose 1881 assassination shortly after taking office made the family name widely known. By the time this photograph was made, around 1907, James Rudolph had become a prominent public official in his own right and would serve as Secretary of the Interior under Theodore Roosevelt. The print was copyrighted by the photographer George Prince, and the catalog notes that its date and caption details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified. Even so, the image is a useful record of how a Progressive-era cabinet figure chose to present himself.
