The apostle St. James appears here as a rider, a subject that the caption card's tracings file under horses and saints. The image belongs to a long Spanish tradition. St. James's tomb at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia drew pilgrims across medieval Europe, and he was also venerated as a warrior saint said to have aided Christians against Moorish forces. Such equestrian images traveled to New Spain with settlers and clergy, and Mexican painters repeated the subject for churches and homes. The original is credited only to an anonymous Mexican artist, and no date is recorded.
