Stage star Lillian Russell appears in this c1899 portrait, one of a numbered set of three photoprints copyrighted by B.J. Falk. Russell rose to fame in the 1880s and 1890s through comic opera and musical theater, and she was among the most recognizable performers of her day, admired as much for her public image as for her voice. Studio portraits like this one were widely sold and collected, so they worked as a kind of celebrity merchandise, and the lighting and pose show how performers presented themselves to a mass audience of the period.
